Preparedness

As a critical actor for the security of supply, preparedness is an important part of the water utility's operations. The water utility and the drinking water pumping stations have backup power available, therefore the water distribution functions during power outages, though fluctuations in water pressure may occur.

During power cuts, wastewater pumping stations are shut down, with no backup power available. To prevent wastewater from entering property basements, watercourses and the terrain, we ask you to avoid using water during power cuts, such as showering, bathing, washing dishes and clothes and flushing the toilet. If a property has its own wastewater pump, water use during a power outage can quickly cause a sewer to flood on the property.

During a power cut, make sure that the temperature in the water meter space does not drop below zero and allow for the water meter to freeze. During severe frosts, you can leave the tap dripping to prevent the water from freezing into a plug. Properly isolate water and sewer pipes, the water meter as well as doors and windows in the water meter space. Cover any ventilation hatches.

Are you adequately prepared when it comes to water?

  • Reserve 2 litres of water for each family member for at least three days' supply. Also reserve water for cooking and for pets.
  • For hygiene, you can use clean natural water or be prepared with wet wipes and hand sanitizer.
  • Reserve containers for collecting water. If the water supply is cut off for a longer period (24 h), the water utility will arrange temporary water distribution points for residents.
  • To communicate, you will need a mobile phone and a charged backup power supply to charge your phone. As long as the telecommunications are working, you will be able to access information online. Vaasa Water also uses an sms alerts service in case of disruptions. If telephone and telecommunication connections fail, the authorities will give instructions via radio (Yle Pohjanmaa 88,9 Mhz, Radio Vaasa 99,5 Mhz).
