Disruptions in water supply

Report faults

during working hours 06 325 4187

outside working hours 040 725 7900

We inform about sudden and planned interruptions in the water supply with sms alerts as well as mark them out on our disruption map.

More information about the interruptions can be found in our news feed the next working day at the latest.

   Sudden interruptions in water supply

If there is no water when you turn on your taps, first make sure the problem doesn't stem from repair work or a leak on your property, then find out if there is a leak or repair work going on close by in the area where you live (disruption map).

If the fault is not reported, contact Vaasa Water on the phone numblers above.

If the disturbance only applies to hot water, contact your maintenance company or your district heating supplier. Heating household water does not fall under Vaasa Water´s responsibility.

Hot tip: Always keep a jug of water in your fridge for emergencies like water supply interruptions. You can also freeze water.

   Scheduled interruptions in water supply

When we plan repair work that require us to shut off the water supply, we always inform the affected properties in good time (latest 2 days before). For shorter interruptions we ask that people reserve water in containers for their own needs.

Hot tip: Remember also for a shorter planned interruption to reserve water in a bucket for flushing the toilet!

During breaks in the water supply you must keep taps closed

The repair work may cause hard sediment to loosen from the pipe walls and it may damage your water equipment. When the repair work is finished we flush the pipes until the water clears, but the tap water may still be discoloured. Discoloured water is not dangerous to your health and the colour usually clears if you let the water run from your taps for a while. Discoloured water may colour your white laundry though. If your water donesn’t clear despite running it from your taps, contact us.

   A temporary water distribution point

If the interruption in the water supply lasts over 24h, we will arrange for a temporary water distribution point from which you can pick up water in your own containers. We will inform you about the location of such a distribution point in our newsletters and via text message. The distribution point will also be marked out on our disruption map.

   Prompt to boil drinking water

If the tap water turns undrinkable a prompt to boil the water is issued. The reason for the prompt can be a mild microbiological contamination. The prompt can be issued to a small area or the entire city.

We inform about prompts to boil drinking water via sms, different media, the news feed on our website and on our Disruption map

The prompt to boil water only applies to drinking water and water used for cooking. The water needs to boil for at least 5 minutes and must be left to cool down before it is consumed.

During a prompt to boil water you can still use the tap water for:

  • taking showers
  • washing dishes (dry them carefully)
  • washing clothes (unless the water is discoloured).

A mild biological contamination is countered with disinfecting the water pipe network with chlorine. The duration of effect of the chlorine is several hours, so the water may be undrinkable for more than 24 h.

   Ban on tap water use

When the tap water turns dangerous to peoples health a ban on tap water use is issued. The reason for the ban can be a serious microbiological or chemical contamination. The ban can be issued to a small area or the entire city.

A ban on tap water use is issued by the authorities and we inform about them via sms, different media, the news feed on our website and on our Disruption map

During a ban on tap water use you may use tap water ONLY for flushing the toilet!

A serious microbiological contamination is countered with disinfecting the water pipe network with an intense chlorine treatment. The duration of effect of the chlorine is several hours, so the water may be undrinkable for several days depending on the spread of the contamination.

Flushing water pipes

A ban on tap water use is also issued when we flush water pipes, usually during maintenance work. The flushing may cause hard sediment to loosen from the pipe walls and it may damage your water equipment.

Flushing your toilet is also banned when we flush water pipes, but the job is usually done quickly and seldom cause any interference. The flushing of pipes is marked out on our disruption map only as maintenance work or as a scheduled interruption in water supply.
